I'm Luis Albero Martinez, a biologist from Valencia, Spain. Since I can remember, I've been interested in all facets of the natural world and its inhabitants, specially the wild animals. Since my childhood, I have dedicated much of my free time to observe and study the natural world, beginning with ornithology and now with a special passion about amphibians and reptiles. Some of my favourite animal groups are frogs, snakes, raptor and sea birds, and dragonflies. But I try to be a complete naturalist, so I'm pleased observe and study every animal that comes across both on land and the sea (I love marine fauna, and I'm also an amateur scuba diver).
I studied biology, did a master's degree on Biodiversity Conservation and since then I've worked mostly with herpetofauna in Spain, both as a researcher and as a field technician. In 2025 I've finished my PhD about amphibian ecology, which I did in León University, Spain. I strongly believe in the power of scientific research, including citizen science, to provide valuable knowledge for conservation of delicate and endangered animals as most amphibian and reptiles are. Therefore, as a researcher, I am particularly encouraged to carry out scientific studies with practical applications in biodiversity conservation. During my PhD thesis, I was able to study the effect of agricultural management on amphibian communities in the North Iberian Peninsula, applying both classical (meta)community ecology and molecular methods, using landscape genetics analyses.
In addition, I also try to help these animals through education and active conservation with the Timon Herpetological Association ("Asociación Herpetológica Timon"), a local herpetology group which I founded with some friends and fellow herpetology enthusiasts of my native region (Valencian Community, in Spain). I have also collaborated in local wildlife studies with other groups, such as the Spanish Herpetological Association (AHE) and the Valencian Ornithological Society (SVO). Currently I'm also co-coordinating the II Herpetological Atlas of Valencian Community.
I continue trying to spend on the field as long time as my work allows me. Most of the time I go alone or with some friends to look for herps or birds on natural areas very close of Valencia. As often as I can I perform longer trips to observe and photograph animals on other parts of Spain and different parts of the world. I especially like tropical environments, like rainforests and deserts.
In this website you can find about both my professional and personal activity as a researcher and naturalist, including my scientific work to this day, a blog with some local nature trips and trip reports of my naturalistic trips outside Spain, where I also show my work as an amateur wildlife photographer. I hope all of you enjoy my content! Feel free to contact me via this website or by Facebook or Instagram (see below). If you are interested on birding, you can check also my eBird profile.
